the baseball of judgment
22 September 2007, 1:54 pm
subtitle (or excerpt)
The unusual wording of the message made me imagine a sentient baseball that functioned as an avatar of the entire MLB organization. I was a little nonplussed to think of this very important piece of magic sports equipment pondering my particular personal concern. But apparently the word “soon” was being used in , if not […]

financial foolhardiness
19 September 2007, 8:51 am
subtitle (or excerpt)
In increasing order of magnitude:
Yesterday I gave a busker a couple bucks for the first time since moving to MA. Why? He ‘d just played Lou Reed’s “Romeo Had Juliette,” from New York — certainly not my favorite Reed solo tune, but maybe my favorite Reed solo album — and got enough of the words […]

telepathic order fulfillment
17 September 2007, 8:07 pm
subtitle (or excerpt)
I think CD Baby has a technology that figures out what I’m going to order from them a few days before I order it. I’ve placed my last two orders with them on Fridays, and received the package on Monday, which is even more remarkable since we’re on different coasts.

welcome bike #5
2 September 2007, 2:55 pm
subtitle (or excerpt)
I bought my fourth bike, a blue Jamis Tangier, #WLH3438M, on 4 September 1997.
A few days before its 10th birthday, the right chainstay cracked.
I dug up the original receipt (from DC’s awesome City Bikes) and did a little calling around. It seemed likely that Jamis would honor the lifetime frame warranty, but it also seemed […]

honk to impeach
26 August 2007, 11:07 am
subtitle (or excerpt)
You’d probably expect me to be down with the Honk-to-impeach folks, and at first I was, but the more I think about it, the more this protest bugs me.
It creates an impression of consensus whether it exists or not. If anyone is honking, it seems like the traffic flow is in agreement with the sentiment. […]

book report: Jennifer Trynin; Everything I’m Cracked Up to Be
25 August 2007, 10:15 am
subtitle (or excerpt)
If I were dictator of the world, everybody who wanted to form a band to play in front of people would be legally required to watch Standing in the Shadows of Motown first, and everyone who wanted to sign a record deal would be required to read Everything I’m Cracked Up to Be. In my […]

two huzzahs
5 August 2007, 3:40 pm
subtitle (or excerpt)
OMG JamSpot so totally rocks! When I first heard about this place, I figured there was no way I could afford to rehearse there. Nice equipment in good condition, rooms with honest-to-goodness acoustic treatment, and ample off-street parking!? But it turns out, JamSpot’s rates are completely competitive with the typical scuzzy rehearsal rooms I’m used […]

a new favorite artist
26 July 2007, 9:11 am
subtitle (or excerpt)
Art by Chris Jordan (also a short interview). Wow. Just, wow.
I don’t think his work needs any words, but a) words are my stock in trade and b) if you’re like me, you won’t just click some random link without some context. So I proclaim that Chris Jordan is the Fugazi of digital photography, because […]
