bike lane markers around town

22 May 2008, 7:34 pm
subtitle (or excerpt)

Somerville has been freshening up the bike lane markers. First they indicate where they should go:

Then they stencil the marker right on top:

Sometimes this makes it look like the iconic cyclist is wearing a cliché asian peasant hat

The narrow headed Somervillian riders make some of their skullish Cantabridgian counterparts look rather macabre in comparison:

Especially since […]

top 5 commute scares

26 April 2008, 10:17 am
subtitle (or excerpt)

Road hazards that don’t affect 4-wheeled traffic
Loose gravel is bad. So are vertical discontinuities parallel to the road.
Other bikes where I don’t expect them
Riding against traffic or failing to obey traffic signals/yield right-of-way
Vehicles turning left across my path when I have the right-of-way
Vehicles nudging into the intersection are also scary; I can’t tell if they […]

patriots’ day synchronicity

21 April 2008, 7:33 pm
subtitle (or excerpt)

I’d never heard of Patriots’ Day before moving to Massachusetts, so it’s sheer coincidence that on April 20th (which splits the difference between the actual commemorated date and the day of observance) I happened to ride my bike to Lexington.

subtitle (or excerpt)

New what-can-I-eat-at-a-turnpike-rest-stop? favorite: Cajun Hot Sticks. One by itself isn’t very hot, but they ramp up fast, and after a few of mouthfuls, I need to stop for a while. At the current rate, an 8 ounce package of this snack will last me about a week. Unfortunately, not everything unhealthy has this effect, […]

Too much Madman!

21 February 2008, 12:08 pm
subtitle (or excerpt)

Walking home from The Independent last Sunday, we espied the new-to-the-hood Hub Comics, from which we emerged with a slightly-inconvenient-to-carry-home mix of goodies.
They had a couple compliations of Mike Allred’s Madman, and I bought both in a fit of nostalgia.
If you don’t know Madman, “the world’s snappiest comic magazine”, the titular protagonist is one […]

6 years of olives

13 February 2008, 8:38 pm
subtitle (or excerpt)

Six years ago, I met my love in person for the first time (although we’d corresponded for years before that).
Shortly thereafter, olives acquired special significance (or maybe enniccafigis) in our relationship, and we started giving each other olive-themed presents.

At left, chocolate olives (again), from me, for Christmas. At right, incredibly awesome crocheted olives and […]
