giddy like a school boy

So after years of mercilessly making fun of bands who played various battles-of-the-bands and industry showcases, I’m in one, to wit Little Steven’s Rocking Garage, and gol-durned if I’m not, um, “giddy.” I get to play Lupo’s in Providence, a really nice room, and I get to share the stage with either the Real Kids (yeah!), the Lyres (yay!), or the Charms (who?). We play two tunes either next Thursday or Friday, and if we’re one of 4 (out of 20) semi-finalists, we get to play a 20 minute set on Saturday.

Don’t worry. I’m not selling out, turning into a careerist, or buying into the corporate bullshit. And I still want a major label record deal like I want a case of syphilis.

But it’s a lot more fun to play to a room full of people than to a handful, and it’s a lot more fun to play with some better bands than the bottom-of-the-rung crew, and it’s a kick-and-a-half to play a big stage like Lupo’s, even if it’s only for 10 minutes.

And while I could hardly care less about playing for influential industry folks (yawn) it’s cool to get this band in front of people who don’t already know one of us personally. Especially because this band may have more immediate appeal in a straightforward rocking way than several of my previous outfits, and I think we might win some folks over. But even if none of them ever come see us again, I think it’ll be a blast.
