jeers! to TicketMaster
16 June 2005, 10:24 amJeers! to TicketMaster.
On May 2nd, I went to their site with the intention of buying tickets for an indie rock show at TT the Bear’s. I didn’t even complete the purchase — because the combined fees seemed excessive, more than half the face value of the ticket. I’d already supplied an email address by the time I abandoned the transaction, but I most certainly had not opted in to any ticket alert list. (Nor had I been presented with an opportunity to opt out.)
Here’s a partial list of the unsolicited emails I’ve received from TicketMaster since:
- Don’t miss Ozzfest 2005
- Don’t miss Rufus Wainwright, Ben Folds
- Don’t miss The Wiggles
- Don’t miss World Wrestling Ent. Presents: Smackdown!
- Don’t miss Backstreet Boys
And after repeated attempts to unsubscribe, I’m still getting them.
I have three lessons for TicketMaster (and other online retailers):
- Intelligently use the data you’ve already got.
- Simplify your links.
- Don’t cling.
So you’re saying it’s actually possible to not get messages from Staples? That’s a relief.
