terrible fanboy

10 September 2006, 10:59 am

Friday morning I got an email from Mr. TeenBeat (presumably coz I’ve recentish done the mail-order thing) announcing a CD tag sale in a Cambridge driveway. This definitely softened my envy of all the folks who went to the 25th anniversary Touch and Go party.

I guess I’d envisioned something like a smaller-scale version of the old Arlington indie-rock flea markets, but it was even smaller than I thought - just one table with a few boxes of assorted CDs, Mr. Teenbeat and two adorable kids, and a big box of TeenBeat overstock freebie goodies (I wasn’t too greedy with those: I was tempted to nab all the yearly compilations, coz I coudn’t remember which ones I hadn’t picked up, but I didn’t). There was lots of great stuff, though, and I bought about ten times as many discs as I’d planned to (including several upgrades to albums I’d downloaded from emusic). Alas, no Perfect Teeth to replace the copy I sold in the mistaken belief that it was a dupe.

The prize of the day was definitely John SimsPalomino. I saw John Sims play at Galaxy Hut many moons ago, and I enjoyed their set a lot despite the obviousness of their influences (Stereolab and My Bloody Valentine, most prominently). But I forewent the opportunity to purchase their (expensive!) disc in favor of having another beer, a decision I’ve rued ever since, because I never saw another copy. (Later on, I got hopelessly confused between John Sims and the not-entirely-dissimilar Ms. John Soda.)

I’ve certainly encountered people who were unhappy when someone chose to sell one of their CDs. So if you happen to have been involved with one of the discs I acquired from Mr. Robinson, I’m sure it was a spare, or that he thought it was. But part of the fun of having some of Mr. Robinson’s cast-offs is knowing their provenance. So, to jog my memory in years hence, here’s my haul.
