icked by the internets

I never had anything good to say about Jerry Falwell when he was alive. I doubt we would have enjoyed each other’s company. It’s not that I subscribe wholly to the credo “never speak ill of the dead.” In fact, the way I feel after checking my newsreaders this morning most closely resembles the way I felt during all the revisionist (or so it seemed to me) lauding of Ronald Reagan after he passed away.

I find the gleeful outpouring of vitriol and hate-speech directed at Falwell immediately after his death disquieting. However monstrous some of his words and deeds may have been, he was a human being. He’s presumably survived by people who cared about him as a human being, and miss him, and I see little value in hurting and offending those people.

Kind of funny to see Larry Flynt taking the high road, but it’s a weird, weird world.
