welcome bike #5

My fourth bike, a blue Jamis Tangier

I bought my fourth bike, a blue Jamis Tangier, #WLH3438M, on 4 September 1997.

A few days before its 10th birthday, the right chainstay cracked.

Cracked right chainstay

I dug up the original receipt (from DC’s awesome City Bikes) and did a little calling around. It seemed likely that Jamis would honor the lifetime frame warranty, but it also seemed likely that it would be prohibitively expensive to strip and ship the frame, rent another bike for at least a month, and cobble the replacement frame and original parts into a functional bike.

So bike #4 is bound for Bikes not Bombs as a parts bike, as soon as I can figure out how to safely get it there.

And we welcome bike #5, a Bianchi Castro Valley, #H1CR137412, to the family, courtesy of the also-awesome Ace Wheelworks:

I like the orange. How’s the new ride so far?

Pretty sweet! The tires are narrower than I’m used to, but after a few miles I started getting accustomed to them. The test ride convinced me to upgrade the fenders and pedals (which is why they don’t quite match). It’s very quiet (my old brakes were on the squealy side).
