so lucky

11 February 2008, 8:56 am

Yesterday’s weather wasn’t like weather so much as like weather special effects. We got mmmmaybe a quarter inch of snow total, but it all came down in two five minute mini-blizzard bursts — with sunshine and puffy clouds in between. (And the second snow was pretty much scoured away by fierce overnight winds — the kind that make the half-ripped off siding go clang-clangity against your house.) When I left for work this morning it was around -10C (13F). That alone wouldn’t have deterred me from riding my bike to work, but predicted gusts approaching 70 kph (43mph) did.

As I was entering the building, with my index finger curled around the door handle, one of those gusts came along and flung the door wide. I got my finger free, but it was not pleasant for several minutes afterward. I thought I’d be lucky to get away with a sprain, but twenty minutes later it’s not at all swollen, only a little tender, and has full range of motion.

Am I thanking my lucky stars? Betcher best bonnie bodkin I am.

According to the Globe, MIT recorded gusts of 62 mph in Cambridge!
